"We went through a lot, collectively, to become a Co-op"

A snow-capped lamp post in front of The Shefford

The Shefford is a heritage building in Centretown, Ottawa. It is also my home.

Built in 1912, the same year as the opening of the Chateau Laurier and the sinking of the Titanic, it has seen two World Wars and two global pandemics.

It is a beautiful old building, even at the age of 112.

The Facade of the Shefford Heritage Housing Co-operative

Music: Ernst by Sven Lindvall

By the 1980s, the once luxurious building had fallen into disrepair.

In 1992,  the landlord was selling  and the tenants were facing the prospect of losing their homes.

Instead, they took matters into their own hands, and formed a tenants association, which became the first Board of Directors of The Shefford Heritage Housing Co-operative
